Self Defense Tips: Home Security Tactics

Everyone needs home security whether you live in an apartment on the bad side of town, or in a secure gated community. Having insurance is great, but it can't replace losing personal items, or family heirlooms. It is your responsibility to make your home as secure as possible.

How common are home robberies?

Think it won't happen to you? Consider this FBI statistic: In 2019 (the most recent year that the FBI collected robbery data), there were 1,117,696 burglaries! That's over one million home robberies folks! Burglaries cost victims a whopping estimated total of $3 billion!

Below are a few home security tips you should implement immediately:
  1. Keep each window and door closed, and locked on your ground floor.

  2. Reinforce the windows on your first floor with window stops, and moldings that stop windows from being opened.

  3. Install security hinge pins in your doors.

  4. Use long screws on your front door.

  5. Slide-proof your sliding glass patio doors. use blocking bars are straight pieces of metal or wood that you place in a glass door’s tracks, preventing it from opening.

  6. Install peepholes on your door so you can see who’s there without opening anything. You can also, use a doorbell security camera (like Ring or Arlo) to answer your door remotely.

  7. Replace spring-latch locks with deadbolts.

  8. Get a dog, or make it look like you have one by leaving out a big dog bowl by your front and back door.

  9. Get a security alarm system, and put their signs around your property to alert burglars. Statistics show that burglars will bypass homes with security systems.

  10. Install motion detection security lights on all sides of your house, especially any areas where someone can sneak around in.

  11. Install cameras around your house especially any blind spots that have no windows.

  12. Install manual locks or bars on garage doors so burglars cannot open them from the outside.

  13. Use a combination of low-tech and high tech, cameras and lights are great, but if you lose power, they are useless.
