Leandro Lo, one of the greatest Brazilian Jiu-jitsu champions of all time, was shot in the head and declared brain dead after an altercation with a man who started trouble with him in a nightclub. He was 33 years old.
This amazing athlete won the World Championships an astounding eight times, making him one of the most successful Jiu-jitsu athletes of all time. He was considered a good guy and true martial artist both on and off the mats.
According to initial reports (still developing), Leandro and his friends were sitting at a table when a man came over and started causing trouble, including taking a bottle off their table, waving it around in a threatening manner, and refusing to return it. Leandro, fearing for his and his friends safety, took the man down and controlled him until he calmed down. After Leandro let him up, the man pulled out a gun and shot him point-blank in the head. Other reports claim the assailant may be a cop, and a competing Jiu-jitsu practitioner looking to elevate his stature by fighting the champ.
News of his senseless death was so sad to read about. My thoughts and prayers go out to Maestro Leandro Lo and his family.
Maestro Leandro Lo is a hero both in his sport, and the fatal night he was killed protecting his friends and himself. God bless you and your family Maestro Lo. May you rest in peace.
