My Story



 

 

 

Hello, my name is Lawrence Castanon.

I am the author of "The Short Fight", a self-defense book designed specifically for individuals who may feel smaller or less physically imposing.

Why Write the Book and Create This Training Site?

This resource is intended for anyone who has ever felt vulnerable or overwhelmed by someone stronger or larger. If you’ve ever felt cornered, whether physically or emotionally, my goal is to provide you with the confidence and skills to stand up for yourself in any situation, whether on the street or in the workplace.

This website, along with the book, is dedicated to teaching straightforward, essential self-defense techniques and fitness methods to prepare you to protect yourself effectively.

My Experience

With over 40 years of martial arts training focused on self-defense and more than 30 years of teaching experience, I bring a wealth of knowledge to this endeavor. I hold a 5th degree Black Belt in Karate, a 2nd degree Black Belt in Close Combat Martial Arts, a certified Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu self-defense instructor, Krav Maga self-defense instructor, a USA Wrestling Coach, a Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach, and a National Academy of Sports Medicine certified fitness trainer.

Between the early 1980s and mid-1990s, I competed in various martial arts disciplines, including Karate, Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, and Boxing. Additionally, I participated in no-holds-barred matches that had no weight classes or time limits. These experiences were complemented by numerous real-world encounters as a short kid growing up in challenging neighborhoods in the Bronx, NY, and Chicago, IL.

Standing at 5 feet 2 inches and weighing around 130 lbs. at the time, I developed techniques and strategies tailored to my size and strengths.

I have created this resource to share these strategies with you, so you can confidently defend yourself or your loved ones when needed.
